All-Ireland League, 2A:
UL Bohemian 8, Old Crescent 32
A BONUS point victory for Old Crescent tonight on the 4G surface at the University of Limerick, a result that gives them the perfect start to the league campaign. From the kick-off they were just that bit better than Bohs who have quite a bit of work to do if they are to seriously challenge for promotion this season. The Red Robins lost three key players in Darragh Frawley, Noel Kinnane and Ian Condell and with Brian Walsh forced off after 20 minutes of tonight’s game, the task proved beyond this young side.
Old Crescent got the first score of the game (and maybe of the AIL season) when Kevin Doyle got over for a try which was converted by Ronan McKenna. It was 0-10 to the visitors when Bohs conceded a penalty and McKenna slotted over to put pressure on the home side to get their first score of the night. The chance came when Crescent conceded a penalty kick and scrum half Alan Kiely was accurate from the tee to get is side on a scoreboard that now read 3-10.
Trailing by those seven points at the break, Bohs must have been hoping for the first score of the second half, but it didn’t materialise. It was Old Crescent who went further ahead on 50 minutes, Jack O’Neill getting over for his side’s second try. The conversion was missed but the 3-15 lead reflected the overall play at this stage of an exciting derby game.
Worse was to come for UL Bohs, Niall Hardiman fielding a well positioned cross kick to score try number three for the visitors with Crescent skipper Ronan McKenna adding the extras for a 3-22 advantage going into the final quarter. Bohs responded almost immediately with left wing Rory White getting over to give the home side a glimmer of hope at 8-22.
Old Crescent dampened that dream with a fourth touchdown, this time prolific try scorer Val McDermott adding to his impressive career tally and Bohs were never going to come back from this 8-29 lead. McKenna added a penalty on 70 minutes to push the lead to 8-32 and that is how it finished.
Next up for these two teams is a home game against Dolphin for Old Crescent next Saturday while Bohs travel to play Queen’s University the same day.
