Irish camp delays announcement of their RWC squad

IT appears that Joe Schmidt has decided to delay the announcement of his 31-man squad for the trip to Japan. Speculation that it would be named today did not happen but the possibility of 43 players making the trip to Portugal this week remains. Rory Scannell and Ultan Dillane left the squad last week.
The Ireland head coach, who suffered a close family bereavement in New Zealand last week, had criticism of the governing body, Rugby World describing the 31-member squad as a “tight number” for the tournament next month.
“With 31 players, I think it’s a very tight number that World Rugby limit you to,” said Schmidt. “They talk about player welfare, but we have a six-day turnaround into a five-day turnaround, and 31 players, it’s very, very complicated.”
On the plus side for Ireland Johnny Sexton is fully fit and could feature against England in two weeks’ time. There was also good news for Joey Carbery when an x-ray revealed that his ankle is not broken.
