Hayes, Wallace, O'Connell star in Lions win

4th Jul - 2009

South Africa 9-28 Lions

O'Connell: magnificent game
THE British and Irish Lions got some consolation today in Johannesburg when they defeated South Africa 9-28 in the final test of the tour.

An opportunist second half try by right wing Ugo Moyne when he snatched the ball a metre from his own line to run the full distance proved crucial. South Africa trailed 6-15 at that stage and a seven pointer would have brought them back into contention.

Stephen Jones addedthe two points, Morne Steyn landed the Boks third penalty to make it 9-22 but two further penalties by the Welsh out-half pushed the Lions 9-28 clear.

South Africa had a try decision ruled out by the TMO with five minutes to go but there was no denying the tourists the victory that they fully deserved.

John Hayes came on for Phil Vickery on 55 minutes.

The Lions led 6-15 at the break.

Rob Kearney had an outstanding opening 40 minutes, making some telling breaks and faultless under the high ball. However, it was a mistake by the Leinster full-back that resulted in Morne Steyn adding a penalty with the final kick of the first half.

Two tries by Shane Williams, the first created by Jamie Heaslip, and a conversion and penalty by Stephen Jones, provided the Lions scores while Steyn had an early penalty for the South Africans that levelled the tie at 3-3.

Simon Shaw was sin-binned five minutes before the break.
