ST Mary's progress in the Transfield Cup ended last Sunday when they lost out 12-29 to Young Munster in Grove Island in front of a very big crowd. Saints should have gone in at half time level with Munsters but a missed conversion and penalty left the score 5-10 at the break with John Barry scoring from a pushover try after a 5 metre scrum just before the break. Young Munster got into their stride in the second half when they scored two tries in quick succession one from a grubber kick behind the Saints defence
and the other from a ball that squirted out the back of a ruck that was collected by Munsters to give them a lead of 5-24 that was scarcely deserved as Saints were totally dominant in the scrum even when they lost a few players
through injury and the lineout was also functioning well.
Young Munster's back line was very impressive when they got ball and on numerous occassions they made 40-50 metres with ball in hand. With ten minutes remaining 'Munsters' put the result of this game beyond doubt when they scored in the corner to leave the score 5-29 but credit to the Saints, they pushed hard right to the end and were rewarded when Sean Markham made a beautiful break to score in under the posts with Sean Lyons getting the conversion to leave the final score 12-29.
Concentration is now solely on the Munster Junior League with two games remaining at home to Kinsale on 4th March and away to Scariff on 25th March. St Mary's are in with a great chance of promotion to Division One if they can win both games and we hope that the supporters come out in force on 4th March for the last home game of the season.
