Richmond can do Newcastle West a favour on the UL 4G surface

By Aidan Corr
WITH three games remaining in this season’s Munster Junior League division one, the heat is certainly on at the top of the table. Leaders Clonmel looked in touching distance a few weeks back but their fortunes have changed and they are now just four points clear of second-placed Newcastle West.
Bandon are also lurking in third place and just one point adrift of the County Limerick challengers while Kilfeacle and District are a point behind in fourth place. These two play each other this week-end
This Sunday’s fixtures will be crucial. Clonmel come to the unfamiliar surroundings of the University of Limerick’s 4G surface where fifth-placed Richmond (pictured) will provide stiff opposition. If the Canal Bank side can cause an upset it would give Newcastle West a major boost if they can get the better of Skibbereen.
Newcastle head coach Declan Edwards will be well aware of his side’s task ahead as they head down to County Cork. ‘Skib’ may be out of the league race with 27 points and in sixth place in the table, but they are always difficult to beat on their own turf. Both games involving this top two are difficult to call but by 4pm on Sunday, the outcome of this tight league race may become clearer.
The meeting of Galbally and St Senan’s, at the other end of the table, will also be interesting. Both sides are just above the relegation zone at present on 15 points and will be desperate for a victory. St Mary’s have a final chance to save themselves if they can get a win over visitors Abbeyfeale in Grove Island. It has been a poor season for the ‘Saints’ and only ‘a miracle’ will save them from the drop. Abbeyfeale will be pleased with their seventh place and this looks like being a tough test for St Mary’s.
