Richmond hit form with league win in Abbeyfeale

MJL1, Abbeyfeale 21, Richmond 29: This was a good performance by Richmond, getting the better of Abbeyfeale on St Patrick’s Day. Although the fixture had nothing but pride for either side, the city club will be happy with their performance and look forward to better fortunes next season. Abbeyfeale, on their return to the division one after a 21-year absence, can feel justifiably proud of their efforts this season. They finish their campaign in a very creditable position in the league and appear to have a squad of players who are capable of challenging for silverware in the coming campaigns.
Richmond led 12-0 early on and enjoyed a 24-7 advantage deep into the second half. Kieran McCarthy had scored the opening try for Abbeyfeale and further tries from Brian Collins and John Murphy as well as three conversions by Derry O’Connor left just eight points between the sides at the finish.
Richmond’s scorers were Dara Oxley two tries, Corey Wells two tries and a try by Gearoid Phelan. Reliable kicker Brian Mullins added two conversions.
According to Abbeyfeale RFC spokesman Conor Prendiville, the county club have mixed feelings about their season: “Survival was our paramount aim in division one. At the same time there was a missed opportunity for a top four place. On the plus side the commitment of the squad and the coaching staff has to be commended in what was our first foray into the top division in over two decades. It was a tough campaign but we won over a few of admirers along the way.”
