Maori All Blacks 10, Lions 32:
AN impressive display over the 80 minutes by the British and Irish Lions in Rothura this morning sounded a warning for New Zealand just a week before the first test. Captained by Peter O’Mahony the tourists dominated for almost all of the second half after leading 10-12 at the break. Four Leigh Halfpenny penalties formed the visitors’ total in that opening 40 minutes Kerr-Barlow while the Maori’s had their scores from a try by Liam Messam and a penalty and conversion by Damian McKenzie, who also missed a penalty chance on the stroke of the short whistle.
It was all Lions action in the second period and a Leigh Halfpenny penalty, his fifth in succession, edging them 10-15 in front. The home side lost their scrum-half to the sin-bin and during that ten minute spell, the Lions added a try from Maro Itoje and a conversion by Halfpenny and a penalty try to go 10-29 in front. A late penalty by Leigh Halfpenny brought the lead to 10-32 and New Zealand rugby will certainly be taking this Lions squad seriously for the rest of the match schedule.
Peter O’Mahony was forced to leave the field with an injury 12 minutes before the finish.
