Shannon, Crescent, Richmond and Thomond advance in cup

THE opening round of the Transfield Cup took place today with Shannon, Old Crescent, Richmond and Thomond all advancing to the next round.
Bruff 0, Shannon 38:
Bruff suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of the Parish boys who ran in six unanswered tries. On the scoresheet for Shannon were Darren Gavin and Aaron Hehir who scored two tries each, and there was one try each from Tim Tobin and Evan O’Connor. Richie Mullane was accurate from four of his six conversion attempts.
Old Crescent received a walk-over from Presentation who could not field a team for this fixture.
Richmond 24, Abbeyfeale 19: This was one of the best games of the junior fixture list at the week-end. Abbeyfeale ran the Canal Bank side close, scoring tries from Derry O’Connor, John Murphy and Kieran McCarthy while Derry O’Connor also contributed two conversions.
Richmond had their scores from Keelan Stephenson, two tries, and one each from Gerard Phelan and Patrick Tuite. Brian Mullins kicked two conversions.
Thomond 19, UL Bohemian 5: No joy for Bohs in this Transfield Cup tie. Their thirds went out of the McInerney Cup the previous day but their seniors will be happy with their Munster Senior Cup victory over Nenagh last Friday night. Thomond deserved the win and they now advance to the next round of this competition.
