The AIL returns: John Lacey to referee Australia and Argentina

LIMERICK referees continue to make an impression on the international stage and this week-end sees John Lacey take charge of the Rugby Championship game between Australia and Argentina. The former Shannon and Munster backline player has been one of the most successful former players to graduate into refereeing as part of the very successful Munster Association of Referees.
Another former Limerick club player, Andy Brace, who had a spell with Old Crescent, will referee the Guinness PRO14 game between Cheetahs and Zebre in Bloemfontein while George Clancy, formerly of Bruff RFC is assistant referee for the Cardiff Blues v Glasgow Warriors game. Joy Neville takes charge of the Ulster Bank AIL fixture between Old Wesley and Ballymena.
The AIL sets off on its 2017/2018 campaign on Friday night with two games down for decision. On Saturday, it’s Young Munster at home to UCD and Garrowen away to St Mary’s in 1A, UCC v Shannon and UL Bohs against Banbridge in 1B; Old Crescent away to Rainey Old Boys in 2B while in 2C Bruff are at home to Omagh and Thomond entertain Sligo.
IRFU Referee Appointments: 15 – 17th September 2017
The Ulster Bank League returns this weekend and the opening fixture of the 2017/18 season will be officiated by Brendan Cuttriss as he takes control of the Div2c clash between Malahide and Bective Rangers at Estuary Road on Friday evening.
Also on duty on Friday night in the Guinness PRO14 are David Wilkinson and Kieran Barry. Wilkinson is the man in the middle for the game at Myreside between Edinburgh and Treviso while Barry is AR2 for Ulster’s hosting of the Scarlets at Kingspan Stadium.
On Saturday John Lacey takes charge of the Rugby Championship fixtures in Canberra between Australia and Argentina while Andy Brace is in Bloemfontein to referee the Cheetahs vs Zebre in the PRO14. Sean Gallagher is on duty as Brace’s AR2. Closer to home and remaining with the PRO14 Frank Murphy is in charge of the game at the Cardiff Arms Park as the Blues host the Glasgow Warriors. George Clancy is his AR1.
Cork Constitution commence their defence of the Ulster Bank League Div 1a title against beaten finalists Clontarf at Temple Hill Road on Saturday with Gary Conway on the whistle.
Elsewhere in division 1a Eddie Hogan O’Connell officiates Buccaneers return to the top flight as they host Lansdowne, Mark Patton takes control of Young Munster v UCD, Nigel Correll is in the middle for Dublin University vs Terenure College and Stuart Gaffikin is in charge of the fixture between St Mary’s College and Garryowen at Templeville Road.
