The city’s Webb Cup final controversy lingers on

(Gerry and Pat Webb presenting the Webb Cup to Old Crescent after their win over Garryowen thirds in the final last April. That result has now been overturned)
THE awarding of the Webb Cup to Garryowen Thirds, who were beaten by Old Crescent in the final, continues to cause much comment and some controversy. For the light blues it has been something of a Pyrric victory.
Rules, however, are made with a purpose and the fact that both clubs involved have emphasised that the decision was solely the reponsibility of the Munster Branch is to be applauded and admired.
It has been an interesting Webb Cup this season. Shannon beat Old Crescent but broke the rules when their seconds side gave a walk-over to Cork Constutution the same week-end. On April 28 Crescent beat Garryowen 28-20 in the final at the Richmond RFC grounds but this week they too lost out due to an irregularity which has been described as ‘an administrative error.’
In the past, thirds rugby in this region was played by over-weight, unfit but enthusiastic males who togged out more for the post-match social side than the prospective glory of silverware. Today local J2s are ultra competitive with squad dedication rivalling the seniors. They train diligently throughout the season, some even go on bonding week-ends and many travel distances for mid-week sessions at city club grounds.
There has been much comment since this website published the latest saga and today the following statement was received from Old Crescent RFC:
“On Friday, 28th April, Old Crescent RFC played Garryowen FC in the Webb Cup Final and won a sporting game by 28 points to 20. Due to administrative errors on the part of Old Crescent RFC, the match was subsequently forfeited under Munster Branch Regulations and the Webb Cup has been awarded to Garryowen FC.
“The Management Committee of Old Crescent RFC deeply regret these administrative errors and apologise to our Webb Cup squad, our Thirds team players, who trained hard and played so well in the Webb Cup Final. The Management Committee also apologise to the members of Old Crescent RFC, the Webb family, Garryowen FC and the Munster Branch.”
