Transfield and Munster Junior cups take centre stage on Sunday

IF traditional grassroots rugby is your favourite cup of tea, or you are just inquisitive enough to experience a classic local junior rugby derby game, then the Markets Field is the place to go next Sunday.
On stage will be Abbeyfeale and Newcastle West, traditionally friendly neighbours until a tug-of-war for rugby silverware is on offer. Both of these sides have been in good form this season with NCW trailing Clonmel by just four points at the summit of the Munster Junior League and Abbeyfeale also well-placed in mid-table.
Up for grabs is the Transfield Cup, a trophy steeped in Limerick junior rugby history, originally presented by a travelling circus entrepreneur called, Mr Transfield, who plied his trade from a location opposite Bobby Byrnes Bar in O’Connell Avenue. The cup was specially made for Mr Transfield, is of solid silver and was presented to trustees Mr John O’Sullivan, honorary secretary of the Limerick Rugby Football Association, and Mr Flynn, the manager of Cruises Hotel in 1889. The final in that inaugural year was to be played on the Transfield Circus Great Gala Day prior to the circus heading off from Limerick on their Grand Tour of Ireland.
Kick-off for Sunday’s final at the Markets Field is 2.30.
The other games next Sunday, all with 2pm starts, are in the Bank of Ireland Munster Junior Cup with a number of local clubs in action. Bruff will have to be at their best to get the better of Cashel in Kilballyowen while travelling side Old Crescent should be strong enough to beat Mallow. UL Bohs have a tricky first round game, they go to Midleton while Thomond will be in their familiar home ground of Liam Fitzgerald Park for the visit of Waterford City, a game that they should win.
Fixtures, kick-off 2.30pm unless otherwise stated.
