UL Bohemian get ‘bragging rights’ win in Thomond Park thriller

Ulster Bank AIL, 1B:
Shannon 22, UL Bohemian 26
IN a thrilling Limerick derby at Thomond Park tonight, UL Bohemian continued their fight for survival with another victory. Home side Shannon fought to the end, scoring a converted try two minutes into injury time to give them a losing bonus point.
It was a fiercely fought encounter with Bohs leading 9-10 at half time and 26-15 on 79 minutes.
Robbie Bourke has been in terrific form since the turn of the year and again on this occasion his kicking proved crucial to this important win for the Red Robins. Shannon took the lead on four minutes, Conor Fitzgerald kicking a penalty, but a try by Joey Conway, converted by Bourke pushed the visitors 3-7 in front on eight minutes.
The Bohs out-half then pushed his side 3-10 to the good but two penalties by Conor Fitzgerald saw Shannon creep back to within a single point. Bourke had another chance of three points on 37 minutes but this time his kick missed the target.
The second half was a real humdinger. Robbie Bourke increased the Bohs lead to 9-13 with 55 minutes played when Shannon were whistled for hands in a ruck but Conor Fitzgerald replied with a Shannon penalty four minutes later.
It was ding-dong stuff with Fitzgerald and Bourke trading penalties before Adrian Enright stormed over for a second UL Bohs try to increase the lead to 12-21 with 11 minutes remaining.
Conor Fitzgerald kicked another penalty for Shannon to reduce the lead to 15-21 with four minutes to go to set up a nail-biting finale. Shannon now had their tails up but when it looked as if the nine times AIL winners would snatch the lead, Bohs replacement Shane Scannell intercepted on their 22 and the Clonakilty flier ran the distance for what proved to be the clinching score.
Shannon scraped a losing bonus point in the last play of the game, captain Lee Nicholas crashing over and Conor Fitzgerald kicking the conversion.
It was a game of high drama and quality and a wonderful advertisement for Limerick and AIL rugby.
