AIL Energia All-Ireland Leagues Round Seven

By Diarmuid Kearney

Energia All-Ireland League Round 7, Men’s and Women’s Junior Cup Preview.
The Energia All-Ireland League reaches a pivotal early-winter phase this weekend, with form lines tightening, rivals colliding, and every division throwing up fixtures that carry implications far beyond a single round.
In Division 1A, Clontarf’s meeting with Terenure is the headline act, a derby between two recent champions whose contests rarely fall short. Tarf arrive on a five game winning streak, thriving on defensive grit and the unerring accuracy of Conor Kelly, while Terenure travel with renewed confidence after defeating St Mary’s in dramatic fashion. Their last win at Castle Avenue came a year ago, and with Carlos Spencer’s side sharpening in recent weeks, they will feel this is another opportunity to derail their Dublin rivals.
The top-four race intensifies at the Aviva Stadium back pitch, where Lansdowne’s resurgence is tested by Ballynahinch, while Old Belvedere and UCD meet in another crucial Dublin derby battle near the foot of the table. Leaders St Mary’s look to respond following their first defeat when they welcome bottom placed Nenagh Ormond, and Young Munster aim to spark their campaign into life at home to a Cork Constitution outfit still hunting consistency after three straight losses.
In the Women’s Division, unbeaten UL Bohemian face a tricky trip to Wicklow. Bohs have been relentless with six wins from six, but Wicklow will make this far from routine. Blackrock, transformed since their opening-day defeat, seek a sixth successive win against Ennis. Railway Union, climbing steadily after three early losses visit Cooke, while Galwegians attempt to rebound from their first setback when hosting an Old Belvedere team quietly gathering momentum. Tullow, still searching for a breakthrough, host Ballincollig in a vital clash at the foot of the table,

Division 1B remains finely balanced. Blackrock aim to steady themselves against bottom side UCC, who reignited their survival hopes with a win last time out. City of Armagh and Naas meet as two teams wrestling with inconsistency, while Garryowen and Trinity contest a significant top four showdown. Leaders Old Wesley travel to Highfield in a test of their staying power, and Queen’s host Instonians in a long-anticipated Belfast derby.
In Division 2A, unbeaten MU Barnhall continue to set the standard as they welcome Ballymena. Shannon’s clash with Galway Corinthians has major top four implications, Dungannon and Banbridge renew their Ulster rivalry, Wanderers go to Old Crescent, and Cashel face Greystones in another critical encounter.

Division 2B centres on Galwegians’ perfect start being challenged by Enniscorthy, with Sligo hosting UL Bohs in a key contest for both sides’ ambitions. Malone entertain Buccaneers, Rainey meet an in-form Skerries outfit, and Clogher Valley seek home advantage against Navan.

In Division 2C, Monkstown and Thomond meet after last playing each other in a promotion playoff two seasons ago, Midleton defend their formidable home form against Clonmel, Bective chase another win against Malahide, Bruff host Belfast Harlequins, and Ballyclare welcome Dolphin in a vital relegation battle.
Elsewhere we have Men’s and Women’s Energia Junior Cup action, the Men’s refixed Quarter Final tie between Seapoint and Wicklow goes ahead on Saturday, while on Sunday in the Women’s Junior Cup, four in a row chasing MU Barnhall take on Queen’s University, with a quarter final rematch from last season will see Tuam take on Enniskillen.
