Bateman Cup semi-final:
Garryowen 14, Lansdowne 12
By Aidan Corr
in Dooradoyle
AFTER a sluggish start, during which they had to defend their line tigerishly, Garryowen deservedly battled their way to the final of the Bateman Cup in Dooradoyle today, scoring two minutes from time to snatch victory.
It was a kicking battle between the respective out-halves, Scott Deasy of Lansdowne and Garryowen’s Ben Healy, for most of this encounter. The home side got first blood, Healy kicking a three pointer against the wind after 10 minutes. Two Scott Deasy penalties pushed the Dublin visitors ahead 3-6 and Healy missed a chance before the break with a similar effort from an difficult angle.
Lansdowne pushed further ahead eight minutes after the restart, Deasy again finding the target but Ben Healy levelled matters, landing two penalties with a missed tee-kick sandwiched between. Garryowen had the better of matters going into the final quarter but on a rare attack, Lansdowne again took the lead, Scott Deasy kicking his fourth penalty that put his side 9-12 in front on 67 minutes.
Garryowen enjoyed most of the possession going in the final minutes, Healy was wide of the target with nine minutes to go but in a flurry of excitement Garryowen build up the winning attack that saw them patiently retain possession before releasing the ball to the right and hooker Liam Cronin hared over the line at the pavilion end.
A good result for Garryowen after the disappointments of defeats in the Limerick Charity Cup and Munster Senior Cup deciders and they will now meet Armagh in the final.
