Death of great Garryowen supporter

(Pictured, the late Joe O’Connor, pictured with the Munster Senior Cup and members of his family in Kilkee)

THE death has taken place of long-time Garryowen FC supporter, Joe O’Connor. A true light blue, Joe played rugby in his younger days and, even in his 90s, never lost his fervour where the fortunes of the Dooradoyle club were concerned.

Two of his uncles, Jay and JJ O’Connor, one in 1895 and the other in 1909, were capped for Ireland bringing great honour to Garryowen during that era.
His only remaining sibling, Fr Jim O’Connor, has been attached to the Redemptorist Monastery in Mount St Alphonsus for decades. He too is a keen supporter of rugby, particularly Garryowen.
Joe lived in Highfield, Ennis Road and was pre-deceased by his wife Esther.
He is survived by sons Jim, CSSR; Joe, Justin, John, Mark, daughters Gina, Geraldine and Susan, brother Fr Jim CSSR; son-in-law, daughters-i- law, grandchildren, relatives and friends.
Reposing at Griffin’s Funeral Home on Wednesday from 5.30pm. Removal at 7.30pm to Our Lady of the Rosary Church, Ennis Road. Requiem Mass on Thursday at 12 noon. Burial afterwards in Mount Saint Oliver Cemetery. Family flowers only. Donations if desired to Milford Hospice.
