WITH the current season winding down, four of Limerick’s six teams were in Munster Junior League action today. Champions of Section A, Richmond were beaten by Clonakilty at the Canal Bank venue and Abbeyfeale drew with Thomond. The St Mary’s v Newcastle West game was cancelled and is expected to be played in two weeks time. In Section B Galbally-Mitchelstown had a good win over Youghal.
Abbeyfeale 14, Thomond 14: THIS was a great performance from the county side after their 71-28 defeat at the hands of Waterpark last week-end and they fully deserved their share of the spoils. There was a fear that the Soda Cakes might be facing a relegation battle at one stage during the latter stages of the campaign, but they rallied in the run-in and they will be happy with today’s result. Both sides scored two converted tries each with Luke Costelloe and Jack Cosgrove getting over the line for Thomond, both converted by Jason Kiely. Abbeyfeale had similar scores with tries from Dan Leahy and Michael Kilbridge while Sean Kilbridge was also accurate with his attempts at the posts.23,
Richmond 23, Clonakilty 39: THE Cork visitors may have clapped the home side before the game but at the final whistle they certainly deserved their16 point winning margin. Richmond scored first after 18 minutes when Darragh Joyce got over for a try, Clonakilty replied with a brace of penalties and a converted try to lead 5-13 but a Conor McMahon try for the champions reduced the deficit to three points. The visitors then landed a penalty kick but once again Richmond responded to the challenge with Darragh Joyce getting in for his second try, converted by Jack O’Hanlon to give them a 17-16 lead.
The scores kept rolling in and Clonakilty went into a17-23 lead, added another three pointer and were leading 17-26 before Keelan Stephenson dotted down and Tadhg Bennett added the extras to leave Richmond trailing by just two points, 24-26. The Cork side were in scoring mood and they breached the Richmond defence twice before the final whistle.
Section B: Youghal 0, Galbally-Mitchelstown kept their opponents scoreless as they marched to another victory in this league.
