Thomond 3rds

By Aidan Corr
IT was a quiet week-end on the junior rugby front with only a handful of fixtures down for decision. Thomond advanced to the final of the thirds competition, the Gleeson League, with victory over Garryowen while in the Webb Cup, Scariff, Fethard and Old Crescent advanced. In the Munster Junior Challenge Cup, Garryowen had a facile win over Thurles.
Gleeson League semi-final, Thomond 26, Garryowen 0: Played in the LIT Grounds on Saturday afternoon, the royal blues advanced to the final of this thirds competition with some ease. Long-serving back-row Pat Deedigan proved to be the star of the show for Thomond, scoring a hat-trick of tries, and it was Leon Scanlan’s try after just five minutes that set the tone for their emphatic victory.
Deedigan’s first try on 29 minutes, converted by Dessie Fitzgerald, pushed Thomond 12-0 in front and two further second half touchdowns from veteran deedigan, both converted by Fitzgerald, sealed victory over a disappointing Garryowen.
Webb Cup, Galbally 12, Scariff 13: It looked as if Galbally were on their way to the next round of this competition when they led 12-3 with ten minutes remaining. Scariff finished strongest, however, running in two tries that gave them victory by the smallest of margins. Carl Burke kicked four penalties for Galbally.
In the other games Newcastle West conceded victory to Fethard as they were unable to field a team while the same situation saw Old Crescent advance with Thurles also failing to field a full side.
Munster Junior Challeng Cup, Garryowen 55, Thurles 3: Garryowen were in scoring mood in Dooradoyle, running up a big score against a very weak Tipperary team. The light blues ran in seven tries: Alex Wootton 3, Eathon Moloney 2 and one each from Geoff Ryan and Cian Leahy with Eamonn Connolly chipping in with four conversions and four penalties.
In the U/15 League final Garryowen beat Young Munster 18-12. Garryowen scorers were, Sean Wilmott and Daniel Feasy a try each and two penalties and a conversion from John Hurley.
In the North Munster U/18 Cup :Garryowen had a 7-3 victory over Old Crescent thanks to a try by Hugh O’Brien-Cunningham and a conversion by Nathan Clancy.
