Munster 32, London Irish 28:
THE home side got the requisite result over visitors London Irish in Cork tonight and there were some impressive individual performances in the red jersey. It was 5-4 to Munster in this try feast with the home side’s tries coming from a second-half brace by hooker Mike Sherry and one each from Darren Sweetnam, Brian Scott and Dan Goggin. The kickers had mixed fortunes with JJ Hanrahan off target with one from three efforts, James Hart missing an early chance off the tee and Ian Keatley also failing to convert one of his two chances.
Overall, the home coaching staff will be happy with the display by what was mostly a second string squad. From a Limerick point of view there were good performances from Shannon’s Stephen Fitzgerald at full-back and Jack Stafford at scrum half. Young Munster’s Calvin Nash and Dan Goggin also caught the eye while Garryowen’s Neil Cronin impressed when he got his first 15 minutes of action at this level.
London Irish played second fiddle for most of the game but the late tries they scored from Topsy Ojo and Scott Steele put a better appearance on the scoreboard. Matt Willilams and Oliver Hoskins scored the visitors’ other touchdowns with Greig Tonks, Theo Brophy Clews and Stephen Myler proving accurate from the kicking tee.
London Irish coach Declan Kidney (pictured) will also be pleased with his team’s effort on a night that saw both clubs avail of the occasion to put some of their pre-season tactical preparations under scrutiny.
