Holders Shannon crash out of the Junior Cup

(Action from Richmond v St Senan’s today. Pic, JOE BUCKLEY))

HOLDERS Shannon crashed out of the Munster Junior Cup today when they went down to Cashel at the Tipperary venue. The poor weather of the past week played its part in the cancellation of a number of Munster Junior Cup and Plate fixtures with the games between Newcastle West and Presentation, Killarney and Abbeyfeale , Galbally and Castleisland and Thomond and Nenagh all called off, mostly because of water-logged pitches.
In the Munster Junior Plate, St Mary’s received a walk-over from Tralee who could not field a team and the ‘Saints’ played a friendly against Young Munster in Grove Island.
Munster Junior Cup, Cashel 13, Shannon 10: This was a real cup tie thriller with the home side snatching victory late in the game with a converted try. Shannon had started well, held their lead into the third quarter at 7-6 before that late score proved to be their downfall. A breakaway try by Bobby Price, converted by Ciaran Cunnane accounted for Shannon’s first half scores while a late drop goal by Barry McGrory set up a thrilling finale to this encounter. Cashel were camped in the Shannon half for much of that second half while a spirited rally in the dying minutes failed to turn the result in the holders’ favour.
Cork Constitution 54, UL Bohemian 8: Fielding a weakened fifteen, Bohs will want to put this result behind them as quickly as possible. A try and a penalty were their only contribution to the scoreboard with the Cork side rampant throughout.
Castleisland v Galbally, called off, waterlogged pitch.
Richmond 11, St Senan’s 6: This was a hard-fought cup tie played in soft underfoot conditions on the Canal Bank pitch. After losing their last two league outings, Richmond were determined to get back to winning ways and they have now qualified to meet Old Crescent in the next round on February 21.
The green and whites led 8-3 at half time. Brian Mullins kicked them into an early three point lead before winger Keelan Stephenson went over for a well taken try. St Senan’s kicked penalties on each side of half time but a second half kick from the tee by Wayne Murphy eased Richmond safely over the finishing line.
Newcastle West v Presentation, called off, pitch waterlogged.
Munster Junior Plate, Garryowen 18, Bruff 0: The light blues made it a good week-end for the club when their junior cup side advanced in the plate with this victory over Bruff in Dooradoyle. Hero of the day for Garryowen was their hooker John Mark Griffin who scored a brace of tries while David Madden kicked two penalties and a conversion.
Killarney v Abbeyfeale, Newcastle West v Presentation, St Mary’s v Tralee and Thomond v Nenagh all called off.
