Late score sees UL Bohemian advance in Transfield Cup

Transfield Cup:
UL Bohemian 27, Richmond 24
THIS was a cracker of a game tonight on the 4G surface at UL. Closely fought in the early stages it looked as if Richmond would advance with five minutes remaining and they were leading 20-24 thanks to a try by Jeff McNamara, converted by Tadhg Bennett. In dramatic fashion UL Bohs’ Dylan O’Connor made a massive break and he grounded the ball over the line to give his side a 25-24 lead. The conversion was good and the 27-14 result puts the UL boys into the next round.
Bohs opened the scoring with a penalty and Richmond responded with a try by Brian Mullins and a conversion by Tadhg Bennett to give the visitors a 3-7 lead. Jordan Dillon then got over for a second Richmond try with Bennett once again converting and at this stage the game was going very much in favour of the Canal Bank outfit. A Tadhg Bennett penalty increased the lead to 3-17 but two quick tries by the Red Robins saw them take a three point lead. Jeff McNamara’s try, converted by Bennett put Richmond in sight of victory until that late winner by O’Connor spoiled their hopes.
Last night in Coonagh, Shannon continued their good early form with a win over UCC in the Bank of Ireland Munster Senior Cup. It was a close game but it was a try by Matt Bourke that proved to be the important score at the finish. Bourke’s try was converted by Michael Cooke who also added a brace of penalties.
