Limerick clubs ready for another All-Ireland League challenge

(Nine times winners of the AIL, Shannon celebrate another victory)

YOU have to go back to 2009 for the last time that a Limerick club lifted the All-Ireland League title. Will this be the season that the famine comes to an end? Early season form indicates that Young Munster may be the best bet. Their only day of glory was in 1993, an uforgettable Saturday afternoon in the then Lansdowne Road when the black and ambers got a thrilling victory of St Mary’s College. The Greenfields boys have started the 2021/22 campaign well being crowned as 2020/21 Munster Senior Cup champions and they are still in the mix to make it back-to-back successes this season.
Garryowen FC have stuttered a bit but it difficult to assess their form due to their lack of competitive fixtures. In division two Shannon are our only representatives. They struggled for much of last season and success looks unlikely again. Our two representatives in 2A appear to be Limerick’s main hopes to finish top of the pile at the end of the campaign. UL Bohemian have shown good form in early season. They have a decent squad and the spirit in the camp is said to be high. Old Crescent can also make a bold bid for a long-awaited trophy. They are playing a very nice style or rugby, they have a fluent backline and their pack should be able to hold their own at this level. Bruff, in 2C, have a difficult opening game on Saturday away to Bangor. This game may reflect the current strength of the Kilballyowen side and they will be hoping to come away with at least a point from this fixture.
In the Energia Women’s AIL, UL Bohemian are away to Galewegians in Crowley Park.
