Local rugby mourns death of Tommy Creamer

IN his youth he was an outstanding footballer, later to be immortalised as the ‘voice of Thomond Park’ and whose admonishment of the hecklers with his well chosen words “it is the tradition of this ground that silence be given to the kicker” is now part of Limerick rugby folklore.
Tommy Creamer passed away peacefully yesterday. A gentleman to his fingertips, rugby was his main sporting interest but he was also one of the best soccer players in this city, starring with Dalcassians and Star Rovers in his youthful playing days.
A proud ‘Parish man’, Tommy was Shannon to the core. In an era when winning senior and junior cups was the equivalent of Heineken Cup and RaboDirect championships, Tommy tasted Munster Junior Cup success in 1954 and again in their back to back titles of 1961 and 1962. He also won a juvenile medal with the black and blues in 1951, a Transfield Cup medal as well as City Cup under 20 silverware in 1953. At 19 years of age he became one of Shannon’s youngest committee members while he was appointed pro for season 1983/1984.

Tommy found a new niche for his sporting life when he took over the public address microphone in Thomond Park in 1974 at Shannon home games. Little did he realise then that his natural talent for public address would keep him in the announcer’s box for the next 30 years. He made his final appearance behind the ‘mike ‘at Thomond Park in 2004 for the Heineken Cup quarter final clash between Munster and Stade Francais.

Our deep sympathy is extended to Tommy’s wife Martha and daughters Geraldine, Lesley, Susan and Jennifer and the extended family.

He will repose in Milford Care Centre Mortuary this Wednesday from 5pm, with removal at 6.30pm to St Mary’s Church. His funeral will take place on Thursday after 11am Mass to Castlemungret Cemetery.

The death notice reads: Tommy CREAMER: Exchange Street, King’s Island, Limerick City, Limerick. Late of Shannon R.F.C. Beloved husband of Martha, dearest father of Geraldine, Lesley, Susan and Jennifer and doting grandfather to his nine grandchildren. Deeply regretted by his sons-in-law, extended family, relatives and friends.

May he rest in peace.
