Richmond and Pres lose in Junior League ties

By Aidan Corr
NOT much to report from the provincial rugby scene with only two games involving Limerick clubs played over the week-end. In division one, Newcastle West had a 20-10 victory over Richmond and Presentation travelled to Youghal and were beaten 28-10.
MJL1, Newcastle West 20, Richmond 10: Played at the county venue today, the home side enhanced their chances of a top four place with an impressive victory over their city rivals.
Newcastle had the better of exchanges in the opening half and led 6-3 at the break, Sean Herlihy kicking two penalties for the winners and Brian Mullins landing a penalty for Richmond. With the home pack edging it up front, the ‘West’ added a try by Tommy Kelliher and a penalty try in that second half with Sean Herlihy converting both. Corey Wells got over for a Richmond try, which was converted by Brian Mullins but despite a strong finish, the Canal Bank side could failed to further reduce the deficit.
MJL2, Youghal 28, Presentation 10: Played on Saturday, Pres had to make the long journey south with just 15 players and as a result played the last 20 minutes with 14 men on the field. Up to that point the Rathuard boys were still in touch, but they fell away in the latter stages of a well-contested game. Ian Wallace came out of retirement for this game and it was deserving that he was the one to notch Presentation’s only try. Craig Airey converted it and also kicked a penalty.
