Saints put the skids under Skibb in MJC Cup

St Marys

Munster Junior Clubs Challenge Cup semi-final, Skibbereen 15, St Mary’s 24:

ST Mary’s good fortune continues and hot on the heels on reaching the final of the MJC Plate last Thursday, they came away from their visit to the Showgrounds with a precious victory over Skibbereen. The victory puts them into another final where they will meet the winners of Clonmel and Cobh.

Skibbereen started smartly and scored an early try followed by a penalty to put them 8-0 in front. Ben Sargeant was off target with three penalty chances but he landed a penalty the get his side on the scoreboard at 8-3 with 18 minutes played. The St Mary’s pack began to get the nudge at the set scrum and with Sargeant in the sin-bin, Greg Barry popped over the conversion of a penalty try to put the Limerick side into the lead for the first time at 8-10.

Skibbereen responded almost immediately with an unconverted try to make it 15-10 to the home side but a Rory O’Donnell try for the Parish side, converted by Gren Barry put the smiles back on the travelling support with the blue and whites leading 15-17.

The Saints appear to have mastered the art of effective scrummaging and it was the pack that again forced a penalty try, converted by Greg Barry, that gave them victory on a 24-15 scoreline and a ticket to another decider that could yet complete a most rewarding season for the Grove Island club.
