Terrific wins for UL Bohemian and Old Crescent tonight in AIL2A

IT was a successful night for Limerick’s two clubs in AIL 2A with UL Bohemian in blistering form and Old Crescent also recording a significant victory. On the 4G surface of UL, Bohs had a great win over second placed Cashel while Crescent had to pull out the stops to snatch a late victory away to Nenagh Ormond. Here are all the details

AIL, 2A:

UL Bohemian 36, Cashel 20

THIS was always going to be a difficult game for UL Bohemian but they stood up to the challenge to edge closer to the leaders in this highly competitive division in the 4G pitch of UL tonight. Plenty of tries for the loyal followers of this level of rugby in a game that ebbed and flowed throughout.

Cashel took the lead after five minutes but Bohs looked determined to make a match of this one and they pushed two points ahead on 10 minutes when centre Joe Johnston got over for a try and Mike Mullally kicked the conversion to give the red robins a 7-5 lead.

Cashel upped their game and they restored their lead with 18 minutes played thanks to a penalty to go 7-8 in front but another Mike Mullally penalty for the home sidesaw Bohs go in at the break with a 10-8 advantage.

Cashel hit the ground running as the second half got underway and they scored a converted try with 45 minutes of the match played to put themselves 10-15 in front. That lead did not last long with Darragh O’Grady getting over and Mike Mullally’s conversion edging Bohs into a 17-15 lead. Hugh Bourke then got in for a try converted again by Mullally as the home side increased their lead to 24-15, Cashel came back with an unconverted try to reduce the lead to four points but UL Bohemian were not going to be beaten on this occasion and they finished in style with a Hugh Bourke try, converted by Mike Mullally who added a try and conversion himself after a man of the match performance.

UL Bohemian: Joe Murray; Marvin O’Sullivan, Joe Johnston, Colin Ryan, Ogie Scannell; Mike Mullally, Hugh Bourke; Phillip Poillot, Joe Bennett, Mark Bromell; Ed Kelly, Sean Seymour; James Ryan, Darragh O’Grady, Brian Walsh. Replacements, Aaron Hennessy, Joey O’Connor, Jack Foley, Tom White, Ian O’Connor.

AIL 2A, Nenagh Ormond 7, Old Crescent 9

The Nenagh v Old Crescent game had a delayed start and it was the home side that went ahead on 15 minutes with a converted try. They held that lead going into the second half but three successful penalty kicks by Old Crescent out-half Ronan McKenna gave his side a narrow victory. After a tense game, the Rosbrien side will consider themselves a little fortunate to shade it but they can thank their pack for a massive effort against a very committed Ormond.

Trailing by the early seven pointer, Crescent dug in during the second period and the first McKenna penalty on 50 minutes gave them hope. A second penalty on 60 minutes set up a thrilling last quarter and the out-half kept his nerve two minutes before time to slot the ball between the posts for a terrific victory.
