Can Munster reach another final?
THE atmospheric Stade Vélodome in Marseille looks set for a 40,000 plus attendance for the Heineken Cup semi-final clash on Sunday, 27 April between reigning champions, Toulon – gunning for a fourth European final in five years – and Munster Rugby, who have reached a record 11th tournament semi-final.
With home-country advantage determined by the draw that followed the conclusion of the pool stage in January, the Heineken Cup semi-finals are played at venues nominated by the relevant home unions following consultation by ERC with the competing clubs.
For France, the FFR nominated Stade Vélodrome as its semi-final venue, while the RFU, with the support of Premiership Rugby, nominated Twickenham Stadium as the venue for a semi-final involving Saracens.
Both Toulon and the local FFR Comité de Provence have reported unprecedented demand for tickets for what will be the first Heineken Cup match played in Marseille. Remaining tickets are now on public sale from a range of outlets, including the Stade Vélodrome (details below).
Munster have sold 4,000 tickets directly to their supporters with thousands more expected to swell the Red Army in Marseille with tickets from general sale.
The Stade Velodrome hosted the 2010 Amlin Challenge Cup final between Toulon and Cardiff Blues, attracting a tournament record attendance for a game won in the end by Cardiff.
The Heineken Cup semi-final weekend will kick-off at Twickenham Stadium on Saturday, 26 Aprilwith the meeting of Saracens and ASM Clermont Auvergne. The current Aviva Premiership leaders will be looking to go one better than last season when they fell at the same hurdle at the same venue, while Clermont, who are appearing in a third successive semi-final, will no doubt be motivated by their agonising defeat in last year’s final in Dublin.
Tickets, starting from £15, are on public sale through, with Saracens also selling directly to their supporters. Clermont expect to bring close to 1,200 fans to London.
Looking ahead to the Heineken Cup semi-final weekend, ERC Chief Executive, Derek McGrath said:
“There is a huge buzz around Marseille for the city’s first Heineken Cup semi-final and the Stade Velodrome is set to host a wonderful another European occasion.
“In London we are working closely with Saracens and the RFU to drive interest levels for the Twickenham semi-final. With tickets starting at just £15, the message to rugby fans is come and watch some world class, must-win rugby as two of Europe’s elite clubs battle for a place in the Cardiff 2014 Heineken Cup final.
“With the support of Saracens and the RFU we are projecting an attendance approaching last season’s 25,500 crowd for the semi-final against Toulon at the same venue.”
