Good wins today for Thomond, Richmond and St Mary’s

THERE was mixed results for local clubs in today’s Munster Junior Leagues. Wins for Thomond, Richmond, and St Mary’s but defeats for Abbeyfeale, Newcastle West, Galbally-Mitchelsrown and Ardscoil Old Boys.

Newcastle West 20, St Mary’s 25: The Saints will be happy with this victory and they add another win to their impressive start to this season’s campaign. It was 14-12 to the ‘West’ at half time.
The Grove Island side ran out winners in the second half thanks to a converted try and two penalties. Scorers for Newcastle West were tries by Aaron Rice and James Guinea with the latter adding a brace of penalties in the second half.

Kanturk 31, Thomond 42: Another great performance by Thomond which maintains their good form so far this season. An early try by Werner gave the Sodacakes a five point lead and Kanturk responded with a converted try to lead 7-5. A try by Josh Dillon brought the score to 7-12 and once again the Cork side kept up their pace with an unconverted try. Thomond scores by Jake Connolly and Jason Kiely saw their lead rise to 19-24 at half time. Andrew Lyons and Jake Connolly touched down for Thomond in the second half and with Jason Kiely’s kicking they ran out deserving winners.

Richmond 17, Muskerry 5: This was a hard-fought encounter with the home side running out winners by a 12-point margin. An early try by Paul O’Shea, converted by Brian Mullins, gave the Limerick side a 7-0 lead but on 35 minutes Muskerry got in for an unconverted try. Richmond extended their lead to 12-5 before the break thanks to an Eoin Hanley try and a try by Jack O’Hanlon sealed the win for the Canal Bank boys.

In the other games played today Abbeyfeale went down at home to Clanwilliam 10-57, Dungarvan beat Galbally-M 28-21 and Kilorglin got the better of Ardscoil Ris Old Boys 13-3.
