Thomond snatch place in Junior Cup as ‘West’ survive
- Updated: 31/03/2025

There were just two junior games of note over the week-end with Thomond getting the better of Nenagh in the Bank of Ireland Munster Junior Cup and Newcastle West going down to Mallow in League 1..
Nenagh 29, Thomond 32: This was as good as it gets in junior rugby with the outcome coming right at the end of a thrilling game. Nenagh ran into a 15-0 lead early in the first half but Thomond fought back with tries from Riann O’Dwyer and Shane Kelly, both converted by Jason Kiely that saw only a point between the sides at the break. Riann O’Dwyer added another try for Thomond as the second half got underway, converted by Kiely and the city side were 15-21 in the lead.
Nenagh replied with a try and conversion as the game swayed from side to side and with the teams locked together 29-29, Jason Kiely ensured Thomond’s ticket to the next round when he was accurate with a penalty.
Newcastle West 10, Mallow 32: Newcastle West have ensured their place in the first division but it was close. Scorers for the Limerick side were Cian Mulcahy a try and Shane Airey a conversion and penalty. Improvement is required next season if the ‘West’ want to remain in the top level.
