Happy days back as Thomond RFC return to the AIL

IT has been a six year wait but Thomond RFC are back in the Energia All-Ireland after their victory against Omagh Academicals yesterday. It brings Limerick participation to seven at that level, and they will now join Bruff RFC in Division 2C. The Soda Cakes have been putting together a promising squad of local talent in recent seasons that saw them win the Munster Junior League twice in succession recently and last Saturday they have filled the gap to rise to greater status.
No doubt, the memories of players and club members of the past were flowing back after the final whistle amongst their more mature members. They have always been a great club, turning out top class  talent from an area that has been well known for its soccer and rugby talent over many years such as the Cusacks, the Fitzgerald, the Brommels and too many more to mention. A special mention of their PRO Barry who has always been reliable.

When this website was contacted by a rugby school in South Africa, (Jean Kelyn’s alma mater), some years ago it was Thomond who stepped in to provide the opposition and a most enjoyable gathering in the clubhouse after the game. This success, following the disappointment of the defeat the previous week-end against Bective Rangers, will raise Thomond RFC to a new height and with players such as Jamie McGarry, Kian McGrath and Jake Connolly, as well as Jason Kiely, who is a brilliant place-kicker and has shown to be an all-round half-back in recent seasons, the royal blues will certainly fit in well on their AIL return. Founded in 1944 after a meeting in the old boat club near the Old Distillery in Thomondgate, the club’s first competitive match was in the Munster Junior League against Garryowen at Thomond Park on Sunday, 15 October 1944. Thomond ended up winning the match by 15 points to 3.
