IT is strongly rumoured that a Limerick AIL club are on the verge of signing one of the most capped and higly regarded world class players in rugby. Recently promoted to the AIL, Thomond, could yet open their season with the return of 100 times capped Keith Earls. The 37 year old backline player, who made his international debut in Thomond Park against Canada, went on to impress at the highest levels, including Lions Tours, after coming through the ranks of schools with St Munchin’s College, a number of local senior clubs before answering the Munster call.
Keith’s dad is also well known in local rugby circles. Playing with Young Munster, Ger Earls was the scorer of a crucial try in Lansdowne Road on an unforgettable Saturday afternoon in 1993. The score paved the way for a victory over St Mary’s College that saw the AIL trophy rest in Tom Clifford Park for the rest of the year. It was played in front of a record attendance for a club game of 20,000.
Another interesting move is the signing of former Young Munster player Karl Clifford who will join St Mary’s RFC this season. Karl is a grandson of the forementioned Tom.
