A review of Guinness Six Nations 2025 by Frank Quinn

Frank Quinn

IT’S all up to France and England to battle it out on Super Saturday. We are probably third at best. We play the gladiators from Italy (4 points) in Rome (thankfully not in the Coliseum but in the Olympic Stadium) in our final game of the 2025 Six Nations.
After our loss to France at the Aviva without as much as a single point to our credit, we really have no interest in Super anything. Well, maybe a bit of Super Sunshine would brighten us up. But we are still stuck on 14 points, in 3rd place after 4 Rounds- maximum 19 point finish.
It is down to France first and England 2nd to have Super Saturdays. France (16 points) play Scotland – fourth (11 points – Won 2/4) and a BP win for them clinches the title on 21 points. Done, all over!
England 2nd, (15 points) play Wales (3 points – lost 4/4) and need a BP win to take them to 20 points and for their extra bonus point. They would like to see France falter so that they have a chance of the championship.
I cannot camouflage or massage the figures any better than this so I am opting for 3rd place for us.
The big talking point is: what does Simon Easterby, Ireland’s Head Coach, do with his selection? Who stays? Who goes home ? Who makes the insurance trip to Rome.
The usual one is “same team again lads. You cannot be as bad again”? It’s the end of the tournament, finish it off with a win against a team which has won one game out of four in the 6N.
The second one is : Time for a change lads – we need to think of the Autumn games and the rebuild for the 2026 team. The three retiring players in the camp – where do they fit in this possible scenario?
We have had 50 players down here in Carton house during the tournament and some of them need a game at international level.
Simon Easterby: “Do I send the lot back to their clubs?”,
Not an easy week at the office for Simon and his coaches. They are advised t0 use words like: watershed – refresh – new blood – new paths, all the cliches you can muster. They have up to Thursday to pick the team squad for Rome and explain the selection. It’s not going to be easy!
