Frank Quinn casts his eye on the ‘state of play’

AS of Saturday 19 October: The state of play in the URC is: Munster
played 4 – Won 4 ,4/4, Leinster 1/4, Ulster, 3/3 and Connacht 1/3
In the previous midweek the Irish selection of 34 players for the
November games was announced and stands at Leinster 21, Munster 4,
Connacht 5, and Ulster 4
We are left with 21 of the squad from Leinster with their record,
representing us in 4 games in November. The selectors never heard of
selecting what is in front of you. Like Form / display In the Munster’s
Saturday win over Leinster – There was a spate of injuries on both
sides, which needs to be investigated, and means that there will be
changes. We could have made this Irish selection months ago – as the
same old names are on the pad. Even though we did have a four rounds
of the URC and a summer tour, none of it counted it seems.
The Irish contingent in the Lions trip were not allowed to play in the
opening URC rounds, Just picking up one game before the Squad meets for
November internationals. Yet the Irish coaches picked a squad from
memory of bygone days.
They could have picked the squad months ago as, it is the same old
group from earlier 2025 games – with an odd change for injuries.
The selection of the Leinster 21 will baffle all rugby supporters after
their display. There must be room for a few fresher faces with new
coaches in two of the sides At Munster and Connacht.
Really and seriously can you just imagine that Leinster/Irish team
representing us in Chicago. ( hopefully with Tadgh Beirne as Captain and
Jack Crowley added).
The IRFU enforced non selection of Irish players has resulted in a slow
Rugby start to the URC, – and lower spectators interests to get back
into rugby mode. It represents less value for money by not seeing who
you paid for -in the squads
Optimistically It is all ahead us we hope – in value / entertainment /
Results and trophies. With a Six nations to come in 2026.
