Frank Quinn looks back: and forwards to ‘Boks’ game

By Frank Quinn
November Blues for Joe Schmidt’s Australia, after some good results in
Super Rugby in the early autumn, they looked to have improved from the
disaster of the last RWC, the Aussies have slipped down the ladder
again with 2 test defeats in succession to Italy and Ireland in the
November tests. The final game for them is a trip to Paris with the
usual 20.10 kick off – on the back of two losses – not a trip to be
welcomed after flights from Sydney to Japan – England, Italy, Dublin and
now Paris.
In the meantime we have the short straw this week as we welcome the
unbeaten South Africans in our final game after they beat Italy (and
Argentina beat Scotland on Sunday) and France the previous weeks. it is
a nice way to finish this session by playing the RWC winners in the
Aviva. we have cleverly avoided travelling in November and winning.
Our selection improved for the Aussie game and we won 46-19 with a
Hansen treble set it up early. it was a good win against a fading
Aussies side who could not handle us and for good measure our line out
worked while the Aussies were all over the place with their line out.
The Aussies were not quick out of the traps (slow) as they conceded 14
points in first ten minutes and we were 19-14 at half time, we were
never headed in the game and finished with a flourish and scored 27
points in the second half.
Now for the mighty South African’s who are looking for a November grand
slam to retain their ranking as the best team in the World. We can watch
for the selection – but Hansen is a certainty for the the 15 green
Jersey. You can make guesses for the rest of the team but they were
winners over the Wallabies and it is reasonable to assume not many
changes will be announced next Thursday. We do need an entertaining game
and a close encounter – rugby needs it and the attendance want an eighty
minute football game, down to the wire and a win for the greens – the
November finale.
England ruined the All Blacks grand slam with a win at Twickenham for
the first time since 2012, it was a well deserved 33-19 romp and they
are looking in good shape for the 2026 Six Nations – and finish off
this session against Argentina.
