Guinness Rugby Writers of Ireland Awards announced
- Updated: 29/10/2025
THE Rugby Writers of Ireland are proud to announce the recipients of the Fred Cogley Award for this year’s Guinness Rugby Writers of Ireland Awards. An honour established to celebrate the enduring legacy of the late Fred Cogley, this year’s recipients are John D. O’Brien and Frank Quinn. The Fred Cogley Award acknowledges members of the Rugby Writers of Ireland who exemplify excellence in Irish rugby journalism while also continuing to recognise and celebrate Fred’s profound impact on journalism in Ireland.
John D. O’Brien, a founding member of the Rugby Writers of Ireland (RWI), has been a pivotal figure in the organisation since its inception in 1986. He served for many years as its dedicated secretary, even hosting committee meetings in his home in Churchtown. As the Head of Sport at RTÉ, John championed rugby’s presence, notably producing the station’s extensive coverage of Five & Six Nations matches. Later, he continued his influential career as Head of Sport at Setanta, all while maintaining his passion for the game as a keen player and member of Old Belvedere RFC.
Frank Quinn’s significant contribution to Irish rugby journalism began with his establishment of the Irish Rugby Review in 1983. At the time, the magazine was the only and soon-to-become leading Irish rugby magazine for decades, covering all levels of the game. Beyond rugby, Frank produced the Irish Cycling Magazine, during which time he famously managed champion cyclist Sean Kelly. His passion for squash was reflected in his magazine empire, with Irish Racquets completing the portfolio. His long-serving and enthusiastic commitment to the Rugby Writers of Ireland is deeply valued by his colleagues.
The annual Guinness Rugby Writers of Ireland Awards will take place on November 11, when the Rugby Writers of Ireland will come together with key figures from across rugby organisations in Ireland to celebrate and honour Irish rugby over the past season. On the night, players from the various grades will be honoured as well as a Club of the Year, Team of the Year and the Tom Rooney Award for outstanding contribution to rugby. There will also be two Hall of Fame inductees announced.
John Fallon, Chairperson of the Rugby Writers of Ireland, shared his anticipation for the upcoming ceremony: “Following last year’s introduction of the Fred Cogley award, we’ve witnessed our writers and broadcasters continue to reach exceptional standards in Irish rugby journalism. Irish rugby has been well served by the journalists who have reported on the sport over the decades. This year, we’re proud to pay tribute to two more journalists whose dedication and insight enrich the rugby experience for fans. It’s a privilege to celebrate their ongoing excellence,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Rugby Writers of Ireland will announce the Hall of Fame inductees for this year’s awards next week. Each year, inductees are chosen for their outstanding contribution to rugby in Ireland, from former players to coaches and contributors to rugby off the field. Last year saw former player and international referee, Joy Neville, inducted into the Hall of Fame, alongside former player and now pundit, Keith Wood.
