Junior Leagues heating up as Limerick clubs shine

WHAT a week-end of junior rugby! The derby game between St Mary’s and Richmond lived up to expectations with the Saints taking the spoils on a 23-15 margin. It was 6-15 in favour of the Canal Bank boys at the break but the second half saw the home side pull away for a welcome victory. Scorers for Richmond were Keith McCarthy and Osama Farag a try each while Brian Mullins kicked the rest of the points. (Scorers for St Mary’s not to hand)

Kilfeacle 14, Thomond 32: Thomond continue to impress in this competition and they were in fine form on their visit to Kilfeacle. Riain Bourke scored the Limerick side’s first try, converted by Jason Kiely but it was 7-7 when the home side got in for a converted try. Jason Kiely has been in blistering form this season and he added to his points tally with a try and conversion that saw Thomond lead 7-14 at the break. A brace of penalties saw Kiely ease his side further ahead and the Soda Cakes increased their lead to 25-7 before Jamie McGarry touched down to seal the win. Kilfeacle got a penalty try in the latter stages of the game.

Crosshaven 19, Newcastle West 33: The West continued their revival of recent weeks with a well-earned win at the Cork venue. Two tries from James Kiely, both converted by Shane Airey, who also kicked two penalties, set the scene for the second half. Crosshaven had some good play early after the break but Newcastle West pulled away with tries by Aaron Rice and Liam Treacy , Shane Airey converting one of them . Next up for the Newcastle West revival is a home game against Muskerry.

In other games on Sunday Old Christians beat Abbeyfeale 68-9, Galbally-Mitchelstown lost to Carrick-on-Suir 27-31 and Chorcha Dhuibhna beat Ardscoil Old Boys 22-20.
