Newcastle West’s weak defence cause of cup defeat
- Updated: 08/09/2025

IT was back to cup time for Limerick’s Junior clubs this week-end with Newcastle West taking on Old Crescent in the Transfield Cup. After a tight game it was the city side that move forward in this historic cometition.
It was 10 points to 14 at the break with Newcastle’s scores coming from James Guina and Sean ?Corbett a try each, and despite two tries from the impressive Daniel Normoyle and one touhdown from Swamus McMahon, both converted by Shane Aire, the home side’s weak defence could not prevent the attacking accuracy of Crescent. Final score Newxcastle West 29, Old Crescent 39.
Big improvement will be required from the ‘West’ in the games ahead.
