Old Crescent fail to break the hoodoo in Senior Cup

Old Crescent 20, Nenagh Ormond 32

NEITHER side had lifted this historic trophy which added to the excitement of today’s Munster Senior Cup Final in Thomond Park this afternoon. At the final whistle it was the Tipperary side who will be celebrating tonight after a second half of fluent rugby. It was 10-10 at the break with the first 30 minutes reaping a try by Dan Hurley and a try and conversion and penalty from Ronan McKenna. A penalty on 32 minutes by Conor McMahon brought Ormond on to the scoreboard and this was followed by a spectacular try from Angus Blackmore. Davy Gleeson converted to level the scores at the break.

Old Crescent opened the second half with an onslought on the Mayorstone try line but it was the Tipperary side that got the first score, Blackmore touching down and Conor McMahon’s conversion puting them 10-17 in front. Worse was to come for Old Crescent. They forced their way within five metres of their opponents’ line but it was Nenagh who broke away to add a third try at the other end of the ground, Ben Pope credited with the score to bring it to 22-10.

Crescent rallied again and Ronan McKenna reduced the deficit to nine points but further tries for Nenagh Ormond, one from Josh Rowland and the other from substitute Ben Pope, put the score of 32-13 beyond the Rosbrien side. In fairness to Crescent they did not give up and with the clock in the red, Aaron Crosgrave dotted down with Ronan McKenna accurate with the conversion.

So it is another long season ahead for Old Crescent to get their names on this trophy. They put up a decent show but  the early stages of the second half, when they were reduced to 13 players, handed the opportunity to the opposition. There is no doubt that this Nenagh Ormond side has a lot of talent throughout their squad and they could well be promoted to a higher division in the All-Ireland League in the coming weeks.
